Derek holds a three year Ecosystem Management Technologist diploma from Sir Sandford Fleming College, where he graduated with highest honours. Since 1998 he has spent his time working in the fields of forest management and ecological restoration, focusing on the cultivation and use of native plant materials. Derek has developed a strong concern for local and worldwide environmental issues. After three years with the City of Kitchener's Environmental Committee, he currently sits on the Pesticide Reduction Task Force with the Region of Waterloo. Years of hiking and camping have lead to a great appreciation for nature, from which the Naturally Maintained concept was molded.
